Terengganu records 17 malaria cases from January to May, all imported, with no local transmission detected among residents.
KUALA TERENGGANU: Terengganu continues to maintain its zero local human malaria-case status, despite a slight increase in imported malaria cases detected since May.
Terengganu Health Department (JKNT) said that a total of 17 malaria cases were recorded in the state from Jan 1 to May 2026.
Of the total, 13 cases involved human malaria, while the other four involved zoonotic malaria caused by the Plasmodium knowlesi parasite which usually lives in monkeys or macaques.
“Of the reported human malaria cases, 11 involved illegal immigrants, while the other two involved foreigners who entered the country legally.
“Epidemiological investigations found that all cases were infected abroad and were classified as imported cases. Terengganu still maintains its zero local human malaria-case status,” it said in a statement today.
It said all cases were detected early and transmission of infection was stopped, resulting in no spread being detected among local residents or foreign nationals in the state.
The JKNT, it added, is always vigilant and takes proactive steps by carrying contact tracing and malaria case surveillance at all health facilities.
In addition, vector control activities have also been intensified and all positive cases are admitted to hospitals.
“JKNT has taken note of the issue regarding the increase in malaria cases as has gone viral. We would like to clarify that the letter being circulated was an internal communication to health facilities in Terengganu, and aimed at enhancing the preparedness of personnel for the early detection of human malaria cases among foreign nationals.
“JKNT will continue to intensify efforts to protect public health. As such, the public is advised not to speculate and to obtain official information on the malaria situation from the Ministry of Health (MOH),” it added.
