Three police reports filed over Sungai Johor pollution incident

Sungai Johor pollution affects 1.8 million residents, 455,757 account holders and 150 fishermen; three police reports lodged so far.

KOTA TINGGI: Three police reports have been lodged regarding the Sungai Johor pollution incident.

Johor Police Chief Datuk Ab Rahaman Arsad confirmed two reports were filed by affected residents and one by Ranhill SAJ.

He stated that further investigations will be conducted by the Department of Environment under the Environmental Quality Act 1974.

“The police are only monitoring the situation and assisting the agency in completing the investigation,” he told reporters after inspecting conditions at Kampung Orang Asli Sayong Pinang.

The pollution has affected three villages: Kampung Orang Asli Sayong Pinang, Kampung Orang Asli Pasir Intan and Kampung Orang Asli Kempas Menang.

The Friday incident has impacted 455,757 account holders, affecting nearly 1.8 million residents across Johor in stages.

Over 150 fishermen, including Orang Asli community members along upstream Sungai Johor, have seen their livelihoods affected.

Johor Public Works, Transport, Infrastructure and Communication Committee chairman Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh previously stated the pollution resulted from soil movement.

He explained a sand-dredging pond collapse at an inland sand mining site contaminated Sungai Johor. – Bernama
