UMK PhD student’s umrah dream for parents ends in tragedy

A UMK PhD student’s dream of taking his parents on umrah was shattered after he died in a campus car crash, leaving his family devastated.

TANAH MERAH: A son’s cherished wish to send his parents on the umrah pilgrimage ended in tragedy when he was killed in a car accident at his university.

Muhammad Amidee Abdullah, 25, a Doctor of Philosophy student at Universiti Malaysia Kelantan’s Jeli Campus, died after the car he was in skidded and plunged into a lake on campus grounds.

His mother, Saida Sulaiman, 51, said her son had often spoken of his plan to take her and his father to perform umrah as soon as he completed his studies.

“I am devastated that he never had the chance to fulfil that wish,” she told reporters at her home in Kampung Pondok Hidayah.

She described her seventh child as a good son who was very close to the family and a source of comfort.

Saida said she would wake Muhammad Amidee every morning for his classes, as he commuted daily from home to the Jeli campus.

He was pursuing studies in mineralogy and was expected to complete his PhD in 2026.

“I was shocked when I received a call from UMK informing me that my son had been involved in an accident and had died,” she said.

The last time she saw him was around 10 am on the day of the accident, before he left for campus.

“As usual, he greeted me and kissed my hand, and there was nothing unusual about his behaviour,” she added.

His father, Abdullah Mokhtar, 59, said he received a call from the university at about 6.50 pm informing him of the accident.

“I rushed to Jeli Hospital to find out my son’s condition,” he said.

Abdullah said the last time he saw his son was also around 10 am that day.

He added that on days without classes, Muhammad Amidee usually stayed home to care for his pet fish.

Before leaving for campus, the student had also planned to buy household necessities for the family using his MyKad under a one-off assistance scheme.

Muhammad Amidee was laid to rest at the Kampung Chawas Cemetery at 11.30 am today.

About 100 people, including family, friends and UMK staff, gathered to pay their last respects.

Bernama previously reported that Muhammad Amidee died at the scene while his friend was injured in the crash involving a Perodua Axia.
