KUALA LUMPUR: An unemployed man received a four-year jail sentence for attacking his nine-year-old daughter with a machete and injuring her left leg.
Sessions Court Judge Mazuliana Abdul Rashid imposed the sentence on K Vejesh, 49, after he maintained his guilty plea during the sentencing hearing.
The court ordered the prison term to run from the date of his arrest on October 22.
Vejesh was charged under Section 324 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt with a dangerous weapon.
The offence occurred at a Setapak apartment unit at 1.30 am on October 22.
Section 324 provides for a maximum penalty of ten years’ imprisonment, a fine, caning, or any combination thereof.
Section 326A permits the court to impose a sentence of up to twice the maximum term upon conviction.
Police received a report on the incident day that the accused had attacked his daughter with a machete.
The victim was admitted to hospital where medical examination confirmed a four- to five-centimetre laceration on her left leg.
Deputy public prosecutor Noor Syafina Mohd Radzuan sought a deterrent sentence, emphasising the victim’s vulnerability and breach of trust.
The accused, who was unrepresented, pleaded for leniency during the proceedings. – Bernama
