Selangor restructures public WiFi services under digitalisation plan

Selangor temporarily deactivates WiFi Smart Selangor programme for restructuring under digitalisation plan to improve cost-effectiveness and access.

SHAH ALAM: The public internet services in Selangor are being restructured under the Selangor Digitalisation Plan 2026-2030 to ensure more effective, sustainable access that delivers maximum impact to the people.

State Islamic Affairs and Innovation Culture Committee chairman Dr Mohammad Fahmi Ngah said in line with this effort, the WiFi Smart Selangor (WSS) programme had been temporarily deactivated to allow for a review of the technical plan, realignment of locations, and implementation of a new model.

He said the decision was made after studies found that usage levels at most locations were low, in addition to the rapid development of 5G mobile networks that offered faster and cheaper internet access.

“A comprehensive study is being conducted to assess the needs, suitable locations, and the best approach for reimplementing the programme.

“This restructuring is expected to reduce costs, enabling funds to be channelled to other digital initiatives that provide greater benefits to the people,” he said during the Selangor state assembly sitting here today.

He was responding to a question from Syed Ahmad Abdul Rahman Alhadad (PH-Lembah Jaya) regarding high-speed internet access, 5G coverage, and free public WiFi in densely populated areas.

Mohammad Fahmi said the review was being conducted under the Selangor Digitalisation Plan 2026-2030 via the WiFi Smart Selangor 3.0 (State Digital Inclusion Initiative).

He said the reimplementation would be done in phases, focusing on high-impact areas such as dense housing zones, schools, public libraries, and community centres.

“During this transition period, PLANMalaysia@Selangor, with support from Smartsel Sdn Bhd, is implementing the Smart Desa Selangor programme to provide internet facilities to support community activities and village information centres,” he added. – Bernama
