90% of Gaza schools damaged or destroyed in war: UNRWA

The UN agency reports nearly 90% of Gaza’s school buildings are damaged or destroyed, forcing children into temporary shelters and digital learning amid ongoing conflict.

ISTANBUL: Nearly 90% of all school buildings across the Gaza Strip have been damaged or destroyed during Israel’s two-year war on the enclave, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) said.

The agency stated that schools still standing have largely been converted into shelters, leaving children to receive education in temporary learning spaces or through digital platforms.

“Across Gaza, nearly 90% of all school buildings have been damaged or destroyed during the war,” UNRWA said in a post on X.

It added that its teams continue to provide learning support despite the widespread devastation.

The war, which began on Oct 8, 2023, has killed more than 72,000 Palestinians and wounded over 171,000 others.

Most of the casualties are women and children, with about 90% of Gaza’s civilian infrastructure destroyed.

According to Gaza’s Health Ministry, at least 591 Palestinians have been killed and more than 1,578 others injured in Israeli attacks since a ceasefire took effect on Oct 10, 2025.
