Angelina Jolie visits the Rafah crossing into Gaza, meeting aid workers and highlighting the humanitarian crisis amid border access constraints.
RAFAH: Hollywood star Angelina Jolie visited the Egyptian side of the Rafah crossing into Gaza on Friday.
She met with members of the Egyptian Red Crescent and truck drivers ferrying humanitarian aid into the devastated territory.
Accompanied by an American delegation, Jolie said she was “honoured” to meet the aid volunteers.
A Red Crescent volunteer told the Oscar winner that “there are thousands of aid trucks just waiting” at the border.
Local media reported the visit was to see the condition of injured Palestinians transferred to Egypt and to look into aid deliveries.
Neither Jolie nor the Egyptian authorities have officially commented on the visit.
The Rafah crossing was set to reopen under a ceasefire in effect since October but has remained closed.
On Friday, Egypt and six other countries including Saudi Arabia urged the international community to pressure Israel to lift constraints on aid.
In early December, Israel announced Rafah would open only for those wishing to leave Gaza, a move swiftly denied by Cairo.
Jolie stepped down as a UNHCR special envoy at the end of 2022 after more than 20 years of service.
