Delhi car blast investigated under India’s anti-terrorism law

A deadly car blast near Delhi’s Red Fort, killing eight, is being investigated under India’s stringent anti-terrorism law, UAPA.

NEW DELHI: Indian police are investigating a deadly car blast in the capital under the country’s main anti-terrorism legislation.

Television channels reported the case is being probed under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).

The law is used to investigate acts related to terrorism and threats to national sovereignty.

Reuters could not immediately verify these reports.

Monday evening’s explosion near the historic Red Fort killed at least eight people and injured 20.

The rare blast in the heavily guarded city sent several states and key facilities into high alert.

Federal Home Minister Amit Shah said “all angles” were being investigated.

Security agencies would reach a conclusion soon, he added.

Police said a slow-moving car stopped at a traffic signal and exploded just before 7 p.m.

Nearby vehicles were also badly damaged in the blast.

The explosion left mangled bodies and car wreckage on a congested street near a metro station.

The blast occurred in the old quarter of Delhi, a city of more than 30 million people.

The Red Fort, or Lal Qila, is a sprawling 17th-century Mughal-era monument.

It blends Persian and Indian architectural styles and is a major tourist attraction.
