Strong 6.6 magnitude earthquake strikes off Sumatra, Indonesia

A 6.6 magnitude earthquake hit Simeulue Island, Indonesia, at a depth of 25 km. No tsunami threat or immediate damage was reported

SIMEULUE ISLAND: A magnitude 6.6 earthquake struck off the coast of Sumatra in western Indonesia on Thursday.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported the quake hit Simeulue Island at 11:56 am local time (0456 GMT).

It occurred at a depth of 25 kilometres.

The Indian Ocean tsunami warning centre confirmed there was no tsunami threat following the seismic event.

Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) recorded a slightly lower magnitude of 6.3.

BMKG stated the quake’s depth was 10 kilometres and confirmed it did not have tsunami potential.

There were no immediate reports of damage from the affected region.

Indonesia experiences frequent seismic activity due to its position on the Pacific “Ring of Fire”.

This arc of tectonic plate collisions stretches from Japan through Southeast Asia and across the Pacific basin. – AFP
