Two earthquakes struck eastern Indonesia early Sunday, with a magnitude 6.5 quake in Maluku and a smaller tremor in Sulawesi, causing no damage or tsunami risk.
JAKARTA: TWO earthquakes struck the Maluku and Southeast Sulawesi regions in eastern Indonesia early Sunday.
According to Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), no damage, casualties, or tsunami risk were reported from either incident.
A magnitude 6.5 earthquake hit Maluku Barat Daya Regency at 1.38am local time with its epicentre located at sea about 48 kilometres north of the regency.
The tremor, which occurred at a depth of 141 km, was felt with moderate intensity in the regency’s capital, Tiakur.
In a separate incident, a magnitude 2.6 earthquake struck Kolaka in Southeast Sulawesi at 12.56am local time.
Acting Head of BMKG Region IV Makassar, Nasrol Adil, said the shallow quake was caused by movement along a nearby fault line with its epicentre about 8 km northwest of Kolaka at a depth of 3 km.
He said the earthquake was felt in Latambaga and Kolaka districts with an intensity of II to III on the Modified Mercalli Intensity scale based on the estimated shaking map and public reports.
“The vibrations were felt by several people and were noticeable inside houses, similar to a heavy vehicle passing by,” he said according to ANTARA News Agency.
Authorities are continuing to monitor both areas for any further developments.
