Brazilian President Lula da Silva demands UN Security Council action to stop conflicts and calls for an end to the US embargo on Cuba.
BOGOTA: Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has called on the United Nations Security Council to end what he termed a “war madness” and demanded the lifting of the US embargo on Cuba.
Speaking at an event in Barcelona, Spain, Lula directly addressed the five permanent members of the Security Council, urging them to fulfil their responsibility to maintain global peace.
“Fulfil your obligations to guarantee peace in the world, hold a meeting, and put an end to this war madness, because the world can no longer bear it,” Lula said.
He cited a failed 2010 diplomatic initiative involving Brazil, India, and Türkiye that aimed to limit Iran’s uranium enrichment programme as an example of missed opportunities for peace.
“When we published the agreement, I imagined they would praise us because Iran would not enrich uranium,” Lula stated, criticising the subsequent US and EU rejection of the deal.
The Brazilian leader also called for stronger engagement against far-right movements online, stating that progressives must not be afraid to speak with responsibility to counter them.
Speaking later at the Democracy Defence Summit, Lula issued a forceful plea for the United States to end its decades-long economic embargo against Cuba.
“End that damn embargo on Cuba and allow the Cuban people to live their lives in peace,” he urged.
Lula argued that the longstanding US sanctions policy had failed to achieve its objectives, leaving the Cuban people to resist and endure hardship.
He emphasised that internal Cuban problems were for Cubans to resolve, not for external powers to influence through coercive measures.
