A Canadian government source says the country will not pay the reported $1 billion fee to join a US-proposed international board for peace.
MONTREAL: Canada will not pay for a seat on a proposed international “Board of Peace” initiated by US President Donald Trump, a government source said.
The source clarified that no such financial request has been made to Canada at this time.
Prime Minister Mark Carney had previously indicated he would accept an invitation to join the body.
The board was originally conceived to oversee the rebuilding of Gaza following the recent conflict.
Its charter does not appear to limit its role solely to the occupied Palestinian territory.
Member countries would be represented by their head of state or government.
The charter states nations could join for three years or longer by paying more than $1 billion in cash within the first year.
“The proposed Charter is still a document under discussion and many terms and conditions are still being worked out,” the government source said.
The source added Carney’s initial willingness to join was to help shape the process from within.
“Canada will not pay for a seat on the board, nor has that been requested of Canada at this time,” the source stated.
