A man in China hid inside a wooden delivery box to rob a woman of gold worth over RM130,000 in a Trojan horse-style burglary.
A Chinese man attempted an elaborate “Trojan horse-style” burglary by hiding inside a wooden delivery box to bypass security systems.
According to South China Morning Post, the 46-year-old suspect, surnamed Zhao, arranged for a delivery worker to transport the crate into a residential building in Hunan province on October 9.
Once inside the housing block, Zhao emerged from the container and followed a woman to her apartment.
He pretended to be there to “recover a debt” before forcing her to open her safe.
Zhao managed to steal 230 grams of gold and RM1,200 in cash worth over RM130,000.
To prevent her from raising the alarm, he made the victim take sleeping pills and waited hours until she was unconscious.
The suspect then meticulously cleaned the apartment to remove all traces of evidence.
Zhao called another courier to transport him out of the building inside the same wooden box.
The woman contacted police immediately after regaining consciousness, triggering a major investigation.
Over 50 officers worked on the case with initial leads proving scarce.
Authorities eventually traced Zhao to Zhejiang province through surveillance and logistics data.
He was arrested on October 18 with all the stolen gold recovered.
Zhao later admitted his plan was inspired by television dramas.
He confessed that he didn’t expect to be caught so quickly despite his elaborate scheme.
