Denmark insists on territorial integrity in Greenland talks

Denmark’s PM calls for constructive dialogue on Greenland’s future, stressing sovereignty is non-negotiable after Trump’s tariff and military action reversal.

COPENHAGEN: Denmark has called for “constructive” talks regarding Greenland that must respect its territorial integrity.

Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen (pic) stated that while political aspects like security and investment are open for discussion, sovereignty is not. “We cannot negotiate our sovereignty,” Frederiksen said in a statement.

Her comments followed US President Donald Trump’s abrupt announcement that he was scrapping tariffs against Europe and ruling out military action to take Greenland from Denmark.

Trump told reporters at the World Economic Forum in Davos that the agreement was negotiated with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte.

Rutte, however, stated the subject of Greenland’s sovereignty “did not come up” in his talks with the US president.

Frederiksen confirmed she spoke with Rutte both before and after his meeting with Trump in Switzerland.

“The Kingdom of Denmark wishes to continue a constructive dialogue with its allies on ways to strengthen security in the Arctic, including the US Golden Dome, provided that this is done with respect for our territorial integrity,” she said.
