FBI expands search for Brown University shooter as manhunt enters fourth day

FBI forensic teams search Brown University grounds as police release new video of the suspect, offering a $50,000 reward for information.

PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND: FBI forensic experts conducted a detailed search of the snow-covered grounds near Brown University on Tuesday as the manhunt for a campus shooter entered its fourth day.

The bureau released images showing evidence response teams scouring the area outside the Providence campus.

A gunman with a rifle entered a campus building where exams were underway on Saturday and opened fire before fleeing the scene.

Providence police screened new video footage at a briefing that appears to show the person of interest walking through local residential areas.

“There’s enhanced video footage so we are asking the public to see the body movements, the body posture… that may help you identify this individual,” said Police Chief Colonel Oscar Perez.

Perez renewed an appeal for residents with home or vehicle cameras to submit any relevant footage to investigators.

Authorities have received approximately 200 actionable tips from the public so far.

Police initially detained one man in connection with the shooting but later released him, stating he was not connected to the crime.

The FBI is offering a $50,000 reward for information leading to the suspect’s capture and describes him as armed and dangerous.

The suspect is approximately 5 foot 8 inches tall with a stocky build.

Brown University has asked students who were near the shooting on Saturday to arrange interviews with police.

“Even an incidental detail may be helpful in investigating,” the university stated.

The two students killed were Ella Cook, vice president of Brown’s Republican Party association, and Mukhammad Aziz Umurzokov, an aspiring neurosurgeon from Uzbekistan.

Brown President Christina H. Paxson said Cook was a passionate and intellectually curious student interested in French studies.

Paxson described Umurzokov as driven, conscientious, and disciplined in his pursuit of becoming a neurosurgeon.

The attack is the latest mass shooting in the United States, where gun control efforts face political deadlock.

The Gun Violence Archive has recorded more than 300 mass shootings in the country so far this year.

US President Donald Trump briefly addressed the shooting during a White House Christmas event on Sunday.

“Things can happen,” Trump said, adding that he wished the injured to “get well fast.”

Brown University, which has about 11,000 students, issued an emergency alert following reports of the shooting near its engineering and physics departments. – AFP
