Israeli forces kill Palestinian man behind West Bank attack

Israeli forces have killed a Palestinian man they identified as responsible for a fatal attack on an Israeli settler, amid ongoing violence in the occupied West Bank.

JENIN: Israeli forces shot dead a Palestinian man they said was responsible for killing an Israeli settler in the occupied West Bank.

The Palestinian health ministry confirmed the death of 22-year-old Sultan Abdulaziz near Jenin.

In a joint statement, the military and Shin Bet security service said forces “eliminated the terrorist… who carried out the terror attack against Gideon Perry”.

The military said it arrested five accomplices during the overnight operation.

Gideon Perry was killed in the Kedumim settlement in August 2024.

The attacker killed Perry “with a hammer, stole his firearm and vehicle and escaped”, according to the military statement.

This comes a day after Israeli forces killed another Palestinian in Nablus who had killed two soldiers in a ramming attack in May 2024.

Witnesses told AFP they saw significant blood but no body at the house attacked by Israeli soldiers in eastern Nablus.

Violence in the West Bank has surged since the Hamas attack on Israel triggered the Gaza war in October 2023.

The unrest continues despite a fragile truce in effect in Gaza since October 10.

According to an AFP tally based on Palestinian health ministry figures, Israeli troops or settlers have killed more than 1,000 Palestinians in the West Bank since the war began.

At least 44 Israelis have been killed in Palestinian attacks or Israeli military operations during the same period.
