Italian Foreign Minister confirms attack on military base in Iraqi Kurdistan, with all personnel reported safe and unharmed.
ROME: Italy has confirmed an attack on its military base in the Iraqi Kurdish city of Erbil.
Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani stated on Thursday that all Italian soldiers at the base were safe and unharmed following the incident.
“I strongly condemn the attack on the Italian base in Erbil,” Tajani said on social media platform X, adding that he had spoken with the Italian ambassador to Iraq.
The minister confirmed that all personnel were secure inside a bunker at the time of the attack, though he did not provide specific details about the nature of the assault.
Italy maintains a contingent of soldiers in Erbil as part of an international mission to train Kurdistan security forces.
The attack follows reports from a Kurdish security source that US-led international forces shot down drones over Erbil on Wednesday.
Those forces are based at Erbil airport, with the security source confirming no casualties were reported from that earlier incident.
AFP journalists in the area reported hearing loud bangs near Erbil airport, consistent with air defence systems engaging aerial targets.
