JFK’s grandson Jack Schlossberg announces run for New York’s 12th District, citing cost of living and attacking White House cronyism
NEW YORK: John F. Kennedy’s grandson Jack Schlossberg has announced his bid for a US House of Representatives seat.
The 32-year-old will seek to replace retiring Democrat Jerry Nadler in New York’s 12th Congressional District during the November 2026 midterm elections.
Schlossberg announced his campaign in a social media video posted late Tuesday.
He highlighted a “crisis at every level” while pointing to cuts in education, healthcare, and social programs.
“This district should have a representative who can harness the creativity, energy and drive of this district and translate that into political power in Washington,” Schlossberg said in his announcement video.
The former president’s only grandson positioned himself as a progressive voice within the Democratic Party.
He previously expressed support for leftist figures like New York mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani.
Schlossberg told The New York Times that “if Zohran Mamdani and I have anything in common, it’s that we are both trying to be authentic versions of ourselves.”
He also used his announcement to attack President Donald Trump’s financial activities.
“The President has made almost $1 billion this year. He’s picking winners and losers from inside the Oval Office. It’s cronyism, not capitalism,” Schlossberg stated.
The Harvard Law graduate could face a crowded Democratic primary field before reaching the general election.
Schlossberg formed an exploratory committee in September after Nadler announced his retirement from the Manhattan-based district. – AFP
