Navalny’s mother demands justice after European poisoning verdict

Lyudmila Navalnaya says European findings confirm her son was murdered, calling for justice as supporters mark two years since his death.

MOSCOW: The mother of late Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny has demanded justice.

Her call follows a joint European assessment concluding her son died from poisoning.

Britain, Sweden, France, Germany and the Netherlands issued a statement on Saturday.

They said they believe Navalny was poisoned with epibatidine, a toxin found in poison dart frogs.

The assessment was based on samples taken from his body.

Navalny died in an Arctic prison colony in February 2024 while serving a 19-year sentence.

“This confirms what we knew from the very beginning,” his mother Lyudmila Navalnaya told reporters outside his Moscow gravesite.

“We knew that our son did not simply die in prison, he was murdered.”

She added that she believes the perpetrators will eventually be identified.

“Of course, we want this to happen in our country, and we want justice to prevail,” she said.

The Kremlin has not yet commented on the European statement.

It has consistently denied any involvement in Navalny’s death.

Dozens of people visited his grave early Monday, including foreign diplomats.

Some attendees wore masks or scarves over their faces.

Russian authorities had designated Navalny and his organisation as “extremist” before his death.

Mentioning him or his exiled anti-corruption foundation remains liable for prosecution.
