Netanyahu aims for Israel to end US military aid within a decade

Israeli PM Netanyahu says he wants to taper off US military aid within ten years as Israel’s economy and defence capabilities grow.

JERUSALEM: Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has stated his goal for Israel to become independent of United States military aid within the next decade.

In an interview with The Economist, Netanyahu expressed deep appreciation for longstanding American support but emphasised Israel’s growing capabilities.

“I want to taper off the military aid within the next ten years,” he said.

Netanyahu cited Israel’s developing economy, which he said would soon reach USD 1 trillion, as a foundation for greater self-reliance.

Israel currently receives approximately USD 3.8 billion in annual US financial aid for arms purchases under a 2016 agreement valid until 2028.

According to the Council on Foreign Relations, Israel has received over USD 300 billion in adjusted military and economic aid since its founding in 1948.

The prime minister first suggested the need to “wean itself off” American aid in May, amid apparent strains in his relationship with US President Donald Trump.

In a controversial September speech, Netanyahu said Israel was becoming increasingly isolated and needed a “super-Sparta” approach.
