New York mayor-elect vows to fight Islamophobia and anti-Palestinian racism

New York’s incoming mayor Zohran Mamdani pledges to combat Islamophobia and anti-Palestinian racism after a Palestinian student faced threats.

ANKARA: New York Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani (pic) has pledged to fight Islamophobia and racism against Palestinians when he takes office.

He made the vow after speaking with a Palestinian student who faced online harassment and death threats.

Mamdani said on social media platform X that Mustapha Kharbouch, a student at Brown University, was targeted after a photo of him wearing a keffiyeh circulated online.

The mayor-elect described the incident as Islamophobia and anti-Palestinian racism.

Kharbouch’s Palestinian heritage was the basis for the doxxing and threats he faced, Mamdani said.

In a phone call, Kharbouch also discussed his academic interests and his summer internship in New York City.

“I told Mustapha that we would love to have him back in New York City,” said Mamdani.

Mamdani made history by being elected the city’s first-ever Muslim mayor.

He is due to be sworn in on New Year’s Day.
