UK police arrest suspect in Manchester synagogue terror attack

A 31-year-old man arrested at Manchester Airport over October synagogue attack that killed two people, bringing total arrests to seven.

MANCHESTER: Police have arrested a 31-year-old man at Manchester Airport in connection with last month’s deadly synagogue attack.

The suspect was detained Thursday on suspicion of commission, preparation and instigation of acts of terrorism.

Greater Manchester Police confirmed the arrest occurred after the man arrived on an inbound flight.

He remains in custody for questioning over the October 2 attack at Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue.

This brings the total number of arrests related to the incident to seven.

Five of those previously arrested have been released without charge.

A 30-year-old man arrested on October 9 remains on bail for allegedly failing to disclose terrorism information.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer acknowledged the Jewish community’s “sense of insecurity” during a synagogue visit Thursday.

Speaking at Bushey United Synagogue north of London, Starmer said he found the situation “simply intolerable, unacceptable”.

The UK leader vowed to “do everything I can to turn that around” and ensure Britain remains a safe place for Jewish people.

Syrian-born UK citizen Jihad al-Shamie carried out the October attack by driving into synagogue security staff and gates.

Worshippers had gathered for Yom Kippur, Judaism’s holiest day, when the attack occurred.

Shamie, wearing a fake suicide belt, then stabbed 66-year-old Melvin Cravitz multiple times before being shot dead by police.

An inquest confirmed Cravitz died from multiple knife wounds inflicted by Shamie.

Fifty-three-year-old Adrian Daulby died from a single gunshot wound fired by a responding police officer. – AFP
