Putin to meet US envoy Witkoff for Ukraine talks in Moscow

Kremlin confirms President Vladimir Putin will meet US envoy Steve Witkoff on Tuesday afternoon for discussions on the war in Ukraine

MOSCOW: Russian President Vladimir Putin will hold talks with US envoy Steve Witkoff in Moscow on Tuesday afternoon.

The Kremlin confirmed the meeting will focus on the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters the meeting is planned for “tomorrow” in “the second half of the day.”

The talks follow recent negotiations between American and Ukrainian officials on a US proposal intended as a basis to end the fighting.

Putin reiterated last week his demands for Kyiv to surrender territories Russia claims, threatening to seize them by force otherwise.

Witkoff has met Putin in the Kremlin on several previous occasions.

The US envoy’s approach has drawn criticism, with an initial American peace plan seen as conceding too much to Moscow’s demands.

The European Union has described the coming week as potentially “pivotal” for Ukraine.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was in Paris on Monday seeking to bolster European support.
