Romanian president to attend Trump’s ‘Board of Peace’ as observer

Romania’s president will attend the first ‘Board of Peace’ meeting in Washington as an observer, reaffirming support for Gaza reconstruction efforts.

BUCHAREST: Romanian President Nicusor Dan (pic) announced he will attend the inaugural meeting of US President Donald Trump’s “Board of Peace” in Washington as an observer.

Dan confirmed his participation on social media, responding to an invitation from Trump, who chairs the body.

The board was originally conceived to oversee the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip following the Israel-Hamas war. Its first meeting is scheduled for February 19.

Permanent membership requires a contribution of $1 billion, a condition that has sparked criticism it could become a “pay-to-play” version of the UN Security Council.

“Romania will have observer status and I will reaffirm our strong support for international peace efforts and our willingness to participate in the reconstruction process in the Gaza Strip,” Dan stated.

He previously noted Romania’s interest stems from its “traditional relations with both Israel and the Arab countries in the region”. He added that “the situation in Gaza is important for Europe”.

At least 19 countries have signed the board’s founding charter since Trump launched it at the World Economic Forum in Davos in January.

Several nations, including Croatia, France, Italy, New Zealand and Norway, have declined to join. Others, like Romania, indicated they would only consider membership if the charter were amended.
