Sudan’s General Burhan signals willingness to work with President Trump and Saudi Arabia to end the civil war, following a stalled international mediation process.
PORT SUDAN: Sudan’s de facto leader General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan is prepared to cooperate with US President Donald Trump to resolve the nation’s conflict.
The Sudanese foreign ministry stated this on Tuesday following the army chief’s visit to Riyadh as a guest of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
The Crown Prince recently presented Trump with a proposed Sudan peace plan during a Washington visit.
According to the Sudanese statement, Burhan praised Trump’s “determination to engage in efforts to achieve peace and end the war in the country, with the participation of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.”
“He affirmed Sudan’s keenness to work with President Trump, his secretary of state, and his envoy for peace in Sudan to achieve this unquestionably noble goal,” it added.
The statement referred to Secretary of State Marco Rubio and US envoy Massad Boulos.
International peace efforts led by US, Egyptian, Saudi and Emirati mediators have been stalled since Burhan rejected Boulos’s last proposed framework.
The general previously accused the mediators of bias and adopting talking points from the United Arab Emirates.
The UAE is accused of arming and supporting Burhan’s foes in the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
The UAE regularly denies sending weapons, fuel and personnel to the RSF despite contrary evidence from independent investigations.
The RSF claims it supports the international ceasefire plan, but heavy fighting continues, notably in the southern Kordofan region.
No new date has been announced for talks under either the US-led mediators or a parallel United Nations effort.
Since April 2023, Sudan has been gripped by a war pitting the army against the RSF.
The army controls the north and east, while the RSF is dominant in the west and parts of the south.
The conflict has killed tens of thousands, uprooted millions and triggered what the UN calls the world’s worst humanitarian crisis. – AFP
