Telegram’s moderation removed over 187,000 groups and channels on Monday, one of its highest daily totals in recent weeks.
MOSCOW: The Telegram messaging app blocked over 187,000 groups and channels in a single day. Monday’s total of 187,634 blocked entities marks one of the highest daily figures in recent weeks.
This is the fourth-highest daily count for February, surpassed only by the numbers recorded on January 22, January 23, and February 15. Since the start of February, Telegram has removed a total of 2.04 million groups and channels.
Within that February total, 7,116 were identified as “terrorism-related.” Since January 2026, the platform’s overall moderation efforts have led to nearly 7.5 million blocked groups and channels.
Of that near 7.5 million total, 27,382 channels were blocked for terrorism-related content. Telegram’s moderation system combines user complaints with proactive monitoring using machine learning.
The platform supplemented these tools in early 2024 with new AI-powered moderation technologies. Telegram was created in 2013 by Pavel Durov, the founder of the Russian social network VKontakte.
It now boasts over one billion monthly active users worldwide.
