Thailand asks India to support its bid for full BRICS membership during India’s 2026 chairmanship, amid talks on online fraud and regional security.
BANGKOK: Thailand has formally requested India’s support to upgrade its status within the BRICS grouping from partner state to full member.
Thai Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow made the request during talks with his Indian counterpart, Subrahmanyam Jaishankar.
The Thai Foreign Ministry said the minister “requested India’s support for Thailand’s interest in joining BRICS during India’s Chairmanship of BRICS in 2026.”

Their discussions covered foreign policy amid current geopolitical challenges.
The diplomats also exchanged views on joint efforts to counter emerging threats, including online fraud.
Thailand invited India to join the International Conference on Global Partnerships to Combat Online Scams.
It expressed interest in co-hosting the event on December 17-18, 2025, in Bangkok to advance international cooperation on the issue.
The two sides also discussed the situation in the Asia Pacific region.
This included tensions on the Thai-Cambodian border and the ongoing situation in Myanmar.
BRICS was created as an interstate association in 2006.
Its five founding members are Russia, Brazil, India, China and South Africa.
The group expanded to include Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, the United Arab Emirates and Indonesia.
Thailand, Belarus, Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Cuba, Malaysia, Uganda and Uzbekistan officially became BRICS partner states on January 1, 2025. – Bernama-Sputnik/RIA Novosti
