UK PM says X moves to comply with law after AI deepfake probe

UK regulator Ofcom probes X over Grok AI’s sexual deepfakes as a new law criminalising their creation comes into force this week.

LONDON: Prime Minister Keir Starmer said Elon Musk’s X is acting to ensure full compliance with UK law.

Starmer made the statement after the country’s media regulator launched a probe into the platform over sexualised imagery produced by its Grok AI chatbot.

“I have been informed this morning that X is acting to ensure full compliance with UK law,” Starmer told parliament on Wednesday.

He added that the government would take further measures if needed.

Ofcom launched an investigation into the social media platform on Monday.

The probe concerns fears that Grok was creating sexually intimate deepfake images.

This would violate the platform’s duty to protect people in the UK from illegal content.

Technology minister Liz Kendall said a new law making it an offence to create sexual deepfakes would come into force this week.

She described the images as “weapons of abuse” that the law aims to tackle.

X did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Reuters.

The platform said earlier in January that it has restricted requests to undress people in images to paying users. – Reuters
