Calls for a vaping ban risk pushing consumers into the black market, where fentanyl-laced products and criminal syndicates thrive unchecked.
THE discovery of fentanyl-laced vape liquids is deeply alarming and warrants the strongest possible enforcement response.
Fentanyl and its variants are highly dangerous substances, and syndicates exploiting vape products to conceal and distribute them must be pursued without compromise. However, this threat should not automatically lead to calls for a blanket ban on vaping.
Criminal syndicates will manipulate anything and everything – from vape devices and pharmaceutical products to food packaging, courier services and digital platforms – if it helps them make money illegally. The answer cannot be to ban every legitimate product that criminals misuse.
Authorities must be smarter and more proactive. Too often, enforcement agencies are left playing catch-up while a blanket ban becomes the easiest and laziest policy response. Such a move may create the appearance of decisive action but it does little to dismantle the syndicates, financial networks and illicit distribution channels behind the crime.
Worse, banning a regulated product could drive more consumers into the black market, where products are neither tested nor traceable and where criminal syndicates would have even greater room to operate.
The real problem is not the device itself but the criminal manipulation of unregulated products, illicit supply chains and online distribution channels. Malaysia, therefore, needs a targeted response built around stronger enforcement, tighter product controls and sustained public awareness.
Authorities should intensify monitoring of online marketplaces, messaging applications, courier networks and suspicious cashless transactions used to market and distribute illegal substances.
Vape liquids and cartridges should also be subject to clear safety standards, proper labelling, traceability requirements and regular testing.
Equally important is a nationwide awareness campaign, particularly for young people, parents, schools, entertainment outlets and vape users. Consumers must understand that illegally sourced or tampered vape liquids may contain dangerous substances that cannot be identified by appearance, smell or packaging.
Public messaging should encourage users to purchase only from legitimate and regulated sources, avoid unlabelled or repackaged liquids and immediately report suspicious products or sellers.
The authorities should also work closely with licensed retailers and industry associations to identify unusual products, share intelligence and educate consumers.
Fentanyl-laced vape products represent a serious public health and security threat. But policy must remain proportionate, intelligent and evidence-based.
The answer is not to push the entire sector underground. It is to isolate the criminals, strengthen enforcement, improve product accountability and ensure Malaysians are fully aware of the dangers posed by illegal products.
A blanket ban may be politically convenient but it is no substitute for effective enforcement.
