Para star Abdul Latif Romly named Malaysia’s flag bearer for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, joined by lawn bowls champion Emma Firyana Saroji.

KUALA LUMPUR: National para long jump star Datuk Abdul Latif Romly has been given the honour of serving as Malaysia’s Jalur Gemilang flag bearer for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, scheduled to be held from July 23 to Aug 2.

Joining two-time Paralympic gold medallist Abdul Latif in the prestigious role is national lawn bowls player Emma Firyana Saroji, the world’s top-ranked women’s singles player, who has been named the baton bearer.

Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) secretary-general Datuk Mohd Nasir Ali announced at a press conference following the council’s 216th executive meeting and 45th annual general assembly at the Academy of Badminton Malaysia (ABM) in Bukit Kiara today.

“The Jalur Gemilang handover ceremony is scheduled to take place on July 16 at Casa 4 of the National Sports Council (NSC) in Bukit Jalil, and will be officiated by Youth and Sports Minister Dr Mohammed Taufiq Johari,” he said.

Commenting on the composition of the contingent for Glasgow 2026, Mohd Nasir said Malaysia will send a delegation of 104 people, comprising 59 athletes – including 41 men and 18 women – as well as 45 officials.

The Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games will feature 10 sports, namely athletics, swimming, track cycling, lawn bowls, boxing, judo and weightlifting, as well as six integrated para sports.

Malaysia won seven gold, eight silver and eight bronze medals at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England.

In a related development, he said Malaysia will send a large contingent to the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, which are scheduled to be held this September.

According to him, the national contingent will comprise 523 members, including 347 athletes and 176 officials, who will compete in 28 of the 43 sports on the programme.
