Jimmy targets top-32 ranking with Su Yin to boost elite tournament chances

National shuttler Jimmy Wong aims to break into the world’s top 32 with new partner Cheng Su Yin by year-end to boost elite tournament chances.

NATIONAL mixed doubles shuttler Jimmy Wong aims to get into the world’s top 32 with his new partner Cheng Su Yin by the end of this year.

Jimmy, who reached a peak ranking of No. 23 with former partner Lai Pei Jing in March this year, made his debut with Su Ying in the 2026 Malaysia Masters in May, where there were knocked out in the opening round.

Jimmy-Su Yin, however, stunned the badminton world in only their second tournament together when they defeated China’s world No 1 pair of Feng Yan Zhe-Huang Dong Ping 23-21, 21-16 later that month.

And that has given Jimmy the belief that he and Su Yin can get into the world’s top 32, thus help improve their chances of competing in higher-tier tournaments.

“Ranking-wise, I hope we can climb back into the world’s top 32 by the end of this year so we can play in more top-level tournaments,” he told reporters after a training session at the Akademi Badminton Malaysia (ABM) here today.

The 24-year-old Jimmy said his immediate focus is on producing his best performances alongside Su Yin in every tournament, starting with the Taiwan Open from July 28-Aug 2.

“The target is still the same – just play our best and give it everything. If I focus too much on targets, I’ll end up putting pressure on myself,” he said.

Meanwhile, national mixed doubles head coach Nova Widianto believes Jimmy’s target of breaking into the world’s top 32 is achievable if the pair can perform more consistently.

“Our current focus is on two pairs – Tang Jie-Clarissa and Jimmy-Su Yin – as our prospects for Olympic qualification.

“Jimmy is targeting a place in the world’s top 32 this year, and I believe that, with their talent and style of play, they can achieve it if they become more consistent,” he said.
