BAM targets four gold medals at 2025 SEA Games in Thailand

The Badminton Association of Malaysia aims for four golds and seven total medals at the 2025 SEA Games, fielding its strongest squad.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) has set a target of four gold medals at the SEA Games Thailand 2025.

BAM president Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz said the association is targeting a total of seven medals from the biennial Games.

He said the target reflects current form and world rankings, with Malaysia’s strongest prospects in mixed doubles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles and the men’s team event.

“I have discussed this with Youth and Sports Minister (Hannah Yeoh) and the management that this is a decision, a collective decision, I think the coaches are also in agreement,” he said.

Tengku Zafrul added that Malaysia is not the only country fielding its best players, noting other nations have made similar decisions.

He was speaking at a press conference after the flag handover ceremony for the Malaysian badminton squad.

In October, BAM named its strongest lineup for the 33rd edition of the Games.

The squad includes two world champion pairs: Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik in men’s doubles and Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei in mixed doubles.

It also features 2025 World Championships runners-up Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah in women’s doubles.

The team comprises Leong Jun Hao and Justin Hoh in men’s singles, and K. Letshanaa and Wong Ling Ching in women’s singles.

Other players are Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun in men’s doubles, Go Pei Kee-Teoh Mei Xing in women’s doubles, and Hoo Pang Ron-Cheng Su Yin in mixed doubles.

All listed players will also compete in their respective team events.

They will be aided by Eogene Ewe and Aidil Sholeh Ali Sadikin in the men’s team event.

Siti Zulaikha Muhammad Azmi and Eng Ler Qi will assist in the women’s team event.

The Thailand SEA Games will be held from December 9 to 20 across Bangkok and Chonburi provinces. – Bernama
