Malaysia women’s badminton team secures SEA Games medal, reaches semis

Malaysia’s women’s badminton team beat Vietnam 3-1 to guarantee a medal at the Thailand SEA Games, advancing to the semi-finals

THE national women’s badminton squad has guaranteed at least a bronze medal at the Thailand SEA Games.

They advanced to the semi-finals of the team event with a 3-1 victory over Vietnam today.

Malaysia started poorly as first singles player K Letshanaa lost to Vietnam’s Nguyen Thuy Linh 21-15, 10-21, 21-23.

The team fought back to level the score through Wong Lin Ching, who defeated Vu Thi Trang 21-14, 20-22, 21-14.

The winning momentum continued in the third match through the women’s doubles pair of Pearly Tan and M Thinaah.

They defeated Pham Thi Dieu Ly and Pham Thi Khanh 21-12, 21-8 to give Malaysia a 2-1 lead.

Third singles player Siti Zulaikha Azmi then secured the winning point by beating Bic Phuong Bu 21-19, 21-19.

Malaysia last won a medal in the women’s team event at the 2019 Manila edition, sharing bronze with Singapore.

The national women’s team’s best achievement at the biennial games was winning the championship in 2009. – Bernama
