Malaysia’s badminton director Rexy Mainaky accepts responsibility for missing the four-gold SEA Games target, saying he is ready to resign
NATIONAL doubles coaching director Rexy Mainaky is prepared to take full responsibility for the badminton squad’s failure to meet its four-gold target at the SEA Games.
Rexy stated he is ready to step down from his position if pressured to do so after the team fell short of the Badminton Association of Malaysia’s (BAM) objective.
“If we talk about responsibility, there will surely be parties who say you should step down, so I am ready,” he told reporters.
He explained that based on player capability, meeting the four-gold target was a realistic expectation.
Rexy described the biennial SEA Games as an event with its own significant prestige.
The only Malaysian gold came from the women’s doubles pair of Pearly Tan and M. Thinaah.
They secured a hard-fought victory over Indonesia’s Febriana Dwipuji Kusuma and Meilysa Trias Puspitasari 21-16, 19-21, 21-17.
This success ended a decade-long wait for a women’s doubles SEA Games gold for Malaysia.
The last win was by Amelia Alicia Anscelly and Soong Fie Cho at the 2015 Singapore edition.
National men’s doubles star Aaron Chia disagreed with the notion of Rexy resigning.
Chia acknowledged the Indonesian expert bears heavy responsibility overseeing men’s, women’s, and mixed doubles.
He said now was not the time to point fingers but to work together on solutions.
The Malaysian badminton team concluded the 2025 Thailand SEA Games with one gold, two silver, and six bronze medals. – Bernama
