INDIA CAPTAIN SHUBMAN GILL has been hospitalised with neck pain and ruled out of the first Test against South Africa.
The top-order batsman felt pain in his neck after scoring a boundary on the second day of play on Saturday.
Gill was taken to hospital for examination after the day’s play concluded, according to the Board of Control for Cricket in India.
“He is currently under observation in the hospital,” the BCCI stated on Sunday ahead of the third day’s play.
“He will take no further part in the Test match.”
The BCCI medical team will continue monitoring Gill’s condition throughout his hospital stay.
The first match of the two-Test series appears likely to conclude on day three at Eden Gardens.
South Africa will resume at 93-7 in their second innings, holding a slender lead of just 63 runs.
The tricky batting wicket has contributed to the match’s likely early conclusion.
Gill now faces a race against time to recover for the second Test in Guwahati.
The second match of the series is scheduled to begin in six days on November 22.
India will hope their captain can regain fitness to lead the side in the crucial encounter. – AFP
