Joe Root defends England management after Ashes loss, calls change ‘silly’

England’s Joe Root says it would be ‘silly’ to change the team’s management after Ashes defeat, praising the progress made under the current regime

VETERAN batsman Joe Root has dismissed calls for change within England’s cricket leadership following their Ashes series loss.

Root stated it would be “silly” to alter the management team, with players “absolutely committed” to the current set-up.

England surrendered the Ashes after just 11 days of play with heavy defeats in Perth, Brisbane, and Adelaide.

Their campaign was marred by criticism over low-key preparations and reports of excessive drinking during a mid-series break.

The team restored some pride with a four-wicket victory in Melbourne, ending an 18-match winless streak in Australia.

The win relieved pressure on coach Brendon McCullum, captain Ben Stokes, and managing director Rob Key.

“In terms of the playing group, we’re absolutely committed to the management,” Root told English media.

He acknowledged areas for improvement but praised the management’s hard work and unique approach.

Root believes the team has made significant progress under the current leadership.

Another win in the fifth Test in Sydney would further strengthen the case for continuity.

Root was captain during England’s 4-0 series defeat in Australia in 2021-22, which cost previous officials their jobs.

He contrasted that period with the current environment, highlighting individual player improvement.

“You look at their records individually, and every single one of them has improved as a player,” Root said.

“This team has improved. I think it would be silly (to consider change) for the amount of hard work and things that have been done.”

The Melbourne victory was Root’s first Test win in Australia in over a decade.

He expressed hope that the team could build momentum with another win in Sydney.

“If we can build on it and do it again next time it’s momentum in the right direction for the next tour here,” he added.
