Azizulhasni Awang to support national squad until Asian Games

National track cycling champion Azizulhasni Awang will continue as a backup for major tournaments until the 2026 Asian Games, says the Malaysian National Cycling Federation.

KUALA LUMPUR: National track cycling champion Datuk Mohamad Azizulhasni Awang will continue to support the national squad as a backup rider for major upcoming tournaments.

Malaysian National Cycling Federation (MNCF) president Datuk Amarjit Singh Gill (pic) confirmed the athlete’s involvement until the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi Nagoya, Japan.

“He is currently competing as an independent professional athlete, but has informed MNCF, he will continue competing until the Asian Games,” Amarjit told reporters after a working committee meeting.

“Therefore, his involvement with the national squad until the Asian Games is guaranteed.”

Amarjit said the athlete nicknamed The Pocket Rocket Man is still being fielded to help in the hunt for gold medals.

The major events include the World Track Championships, the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, and the Asian Games.

Participation in championships after the Asian Games, however, remains uncertain.

“He is making his own preparations as an independent cyclist,” Amarjit added.

“He is a mature athlete who understands what is at stake.”

The 38-year-old’s performance at the Asian Games will determine his qualification for the World Track Championships in Shanghai.

The World Track Cup is scheduled for April 24-26 at the Nilai National Velodrome.

The Commonwealth Games will be held from July 23 to August 2 in Glasgow.

The Asian Games in Aichi Nagoya will run from September 19 to October 4.
