Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola says his focus is on team development rather than winning trophies ahead of their League Cup semi-final.
PEP Guardiola insists his primary focus is on Manchester City’s development rather than winning trophies.
The manager made the comments ahead of his side’s League Cup semi-final first leg away to Newcastle on Tuesday.
City ended last season without a major trophy for the first time in eight years, lifting only the Community Shield.
Asked if he felt extra pressure after last season, Guardiola dismissed the importance of silverware.
“It’s not about winning or not winning trophies, it’s about how the team grows up, how the team is better,” the City manager said.
He stated that last season’s performances did not merit more than one trophy.
Guardiola emphasised that satisfaction comes from performance, not just results.
“That is the target, and all the time has been like that,” he explained.
He added that titles are quickly forgotten, making the journey of improvement more important.
City won four consecutive League Cups from 2018, using it as a platform for domestic dominance.
They were dethroned as Premier League champions by Liverpool last season.
Guardiola’s side currently trail leaders Arsenal by six points in the league.
Chelsea host Arsenal in the other League Cup semi-final first leg on Wednesday.
