Liverpool slump to PSV defeat as Arsenal beat Bayern in Champions League

Liverpool lose 4-1 to PSV as Arsenal end Bayern’s unbeaten run. PSG beat Tottenham 5-3 with Vitinha hat-trick, Mbappe scores four for Real Madrid.

LIVERPOOL: Liverpool suffered another humiliating defeat as PSV Eindhoven claimed a stunning 4-1 Champions League victory at Anfield.

The result piles further pressure on manager Arne Slot with Liverpool losing nine of their last twelve matches across all competitions.

PSV took an early lead when Virgil van Dijk handled the ball while appealing for a foul, allowing Ivan Perisic to convert the resulting sixth-minute penalty.

Dominik Szoboszlai equalised quickly after PSV goalkeeper Matej Kovar parried Cody Gakpo’s shot.

The Dutch side restored their lead after halftime when Guus Til expertly finished Mauro Junior’s brilliant pass.

Couhaib Driouech then capitalised on calamitous defending to score twice late on and complete Liverpool’s latest humiliation.

“The emotions are very negative and disappointing, but I have to be positive about the reaction of the players after we went 1-0 down,” Slot said.

Arsenal ended Bayern Munich’s unbeaten start to the season with a “statement” 3-1 victory at the Emirates Stadium.

Jurrien Timber opened the scoring in the 22nd minute, flicking Bukayo Saka’s corner past Manuel Neuer.

Seventeen-year-old Lennart Karl became the first player to score against Arsenal in this season’s Champions League, volleying home Serge Gnabry’s excellent pass.

Noni Madueke restored Arsenal’s lead in the 69th minute before Gabriel Martinelli tapped into an empty net after Neuer raced out of his goal.

“It’s an incredible statement, but we know the work we put in,” Madueke told TNT Sports.

PSG bounced back from their recent loss to Bayern with a 5-3 victory over Tottenham in an eight-goal thriller.

Vitinha scored a hat-trick for the French champions, including two spectacular long-range strikes.

“It is the first time in my career I have scored a hat-trick and even scored two goals in one match, so it is really special,” Vitinha told Canal Plus.

Kylian Mbappe scored four times as Real Madrid beat Olympiacos 4-3, marking his first four-goal performance in the Champions League.

The victory snapped Real Madrid’s three-game winless streak and moved them into fifth place in the table.

Inter Milan missed the chance to go second in the table as Jose Gimenez’s injury-time goal gave Atletico Madrid a 2-1 victory at the Metropolitano.

Atalanta climbed to tenth with an impressive 3-0 triumph at Eintracht Frankfurt, while David Luiz scored as Pafos held Monaco to a 2-2 draw in Cyprus. – AFP
