Elderly homeless man dies after assault in Butterworth

An elderly homeless man died in hospital after an assault at a Butterworth food court, with a suspect detained and police investigating.

BUTTERWORTH: An elderly homeless man has died in hospital after being assaulted at a food court.

The man, believed to be in his 60s and without identification, was attacked in Kampung Jawa on Saturday.

He was taken to Hospital Seberang Jaya by ambulance and received treatment before being pronounced dead.

Seberang Perai Utara District Police chief ACP Anuar Abdul Rahman said a post-mortem found the cause of death was coronary heart disease.

The victim also suffered fractures to the ribs on the left side of his body.

Police have detained a man believed to be the suspect in the incident.

The suspect’s urine test returned positive for drugs, according to the police statement.

Investigations are being carried out under Section 325 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing grievous hurt.

Police urge the public with information to contact the senior investigating officer, ASP Hasryman Osman, or the nearest police station.
