Liverpool’s late collapse at Leeds is self-inflicted, says Slot

Liverpool manager Arne Slot blames his own team after conceding a last-minute equaliser to draw 3-3 with Leeds United at Elland Road

LEEDS: Liverpool manager Arne Slot said his team only had themselves to blame after conceding a stoppage-time equaliser in a 3-3 draw at Leeds United.

The Reds twice held commanding leads at Elland Road, first through a Hugo Ekitike double and later via Dominic Szoboszlai’s strike after Leeds had levelled at 2-2.

Yet their vulnerability from set-pieces proved costly once more as Ao Tanaka fired in from a corner deep into added time.

Liverpool have now won just two of their last 10 Premier League games, increasing pressure on Slot despite his title-winning debut season.

“It is not the first time we drop points, not the first time we concede a goal in the last minute or we concede a goal from a set piece,” said Slot.

“The only ones to blame are ourselves. If you score three goals, it should be enough to win a game.”

Slot left Mohamed Salah on the bench for a third straight game and did not introduce the Egyptian as a substitute.

Club-record signing Alexander Isak was also omitted, though Ekitike justified his selection with two goals.

Salah is set to depart for the Africa Cup of Nations after Liverpool’s next two matches.

Slot refused to be drawn on the long-term future of the club’s third-highest all-time scorer.

“Today it felt to me we needed different players to bring the win over the line,” added the Dutchman on not using Salah.

“We have to accept the situation we are in. The short-term future of Mo is he goes to the AFCON, but first we play Inter (Milan) and Brighton.” – AFP
