Manchester United stun Premier League leaders Arsenal 3-2 with a late Matheus Cunha winner, cutting the Gunners’ lead at the top to just four points
MANCHESTER United delivered a major blow to Arsenal’s Premier League title ambitions with a dramatic 3-2 victory at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday.
Matheus Cunha’s superb 87th-minute strike sealed a thrilling win for the visitors, handing Arsenal their first defeat in 13 games across all competitions.
The result leaves Mikel Arteta’s side just four points clear of both Manchester City and Aston Villa, who both won their weekend fixtures.
Arsenal had taken the lead in the 29th minute through a Lisandro Martinez own goal after a defensive mix-up.
United equalised before half-time when Bryan Mbeumo capitalised on a poor back-pass from Martin Zubimendi to round David Raya and score.
Patrick Dorgu put the visitors ahead with a brilliant 20-yard strike five minutes after the interval, a goal that survived a VAR check for handball.
Arsenal looked to have salvaged a point when Mikel Merino bundled home an 84th-minute equaliser from a corner.
Cunha had the final say, however, firing a magnificent 25-yard drive past Raya to clinch all three points for United.
It was Arsenal’s first home defeat in 18 matches and extended their winless league run to three games.
United’s interim manager Michael Carrick has now masterminded victories over the top two, having beaten Manchester City last weekend.
The win lifts United into fourth place and continues Carrick’s impressive start since replacing the sacked Ruben Amorim.
