Manchester United’s decision to sack Ruben Amorim could cost the club up to £16 million in settlement payments, according to new financial filings.

Financial figures released by the club disclosed the potential payments to Amorim and his coaching staff.
A filing to the New York Stock Exchange described the sacking as an “event that occurred after the reporting period”.
It stated a provision of £15.9 million, “representing the maximum potential amount of future settlement payments”, will be recognised in the second half of the year ending 30 June 2026.
Reports indicate the final amount depends on factors like whether the 41-year-old Amorim secures a new job within a specific timeframe.
The club also paid Sporting £6.3 million, which was owed in compensation for hiring Amorim from the Portuguese side.
United had previously confirmed paying Sporting £10 million to hire Amorim to replace Erik ten Hag in November 2024.
Ten Hag’s own departure from Old Trafford had cost the club £10.4 million.
The total bill for Amorim’s brief appointment could therefore reach £37.3 million.
Amorim’s turbulent 14-month reign ended on 5 January following a public attack on the club’s hierarchy.
He won 25 of his 63 games in charge, with the team finishing 15th in the Premier League.
That represented United’s worst top-flight performance since being relegated in the 1973/74 season.
The team was sixth when Amorim was sacked after a reported major argument with director of football Jason Wilcox.
Under caretaker boss Michael Carrick, the club has since moved up to fourth place.
A run of five wins and a draw has renewed hope of qualifying for next season’s Champions League.
