Ruben Amorim sacked after 14 months

Manchester United have sacked manager Ruben Amorim, citing the need for change to secure the best possible Premier League finish this season.

MANCHESTER United have sacked manager Ruben Amorim.

The club announced the Portuguese coach’s departure on Monday, just 14 months after his arrival at Old Trafford.

In a statement, United’s leadership said they had “reluctantly made the decision that it is the right time to make a change”.

The club added the move would give the team “the best opportunity of the highest possible Premier League finish”.

United are currently sixth in the Premier League table following a 1-1 draw at Leeds on Sunday.

After that match, an irate Amorim gave an eye-catching press conference where he stressed he was United’s manager, not just the coach.

He told the scouting department and sporting director “to do their job”.

The 40-year-old had alluded to frustration behind the scenes in the build-up to the Leeds match.

He had also refused to clarify recent comments about the club’s transfer plans.

Amorim was appointed in November 2024 and led United to the Europa League final last May, where they lost to Tottenham Hotspur.

The team finished a disappointing 15th in the Premier League last season.
