Safee Sali urges FAM to accept FIFA ruling and focus on football development

Former striker Safee Sali says FAM must respect FIFA’s decision on ineligible players, accept the penalties, and focus on developing Malaysian football.

KUALA LUMPUR: Former national striker Safee Sali has urged the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) to respect and accept FIFA’s ruling on ineligible players.

FIFA overturned three of Malaysia’s Tier 1 international friendly match results, imposing 3-0 defeats and a fine of CHF10,000 (RM51,414).

Safee stated that the focus must now shift to developing the country’s football.

“Mistakes have been made, and FIFA have imposed punishment,” he said at a media conference for the 2025 MommyHana Safee Sali Superkids Cup Championships.

“We must not repeat the mistakes. We need to move on and take more positive steps, one step at a time.”

He believes the national team, Harimau Malaya, retains the determination to rise if given opportunities.

“Players surely want to win, and they will never give up. As long as they can play, there is still hope,” Safee added.

He stressed the squad should continue to receive support as they represent Malaysia internationally.

The affected matches are a 1-1 draw with Cape Verde on May 29, a 2-1 win over Singapore on Sept 4, and a 1-0 victory over Palestine on Sept 8.

Meanwhile, the 2025 MommyHana Safee Sali Superkids Cup will be held at MPAJ Stadium in Pandan Perdana on Dec 27.

The tournament features four age groups: Under-8, Under-10, Under-12 and Under-14. – Bernama
