Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone apologises to Real Madrid’s Vinicius Junior and president Florentino Perez after a heated Spanish Super Cup exchange.
ATLETICO Madrid coach Diego Simeone apologised to Real Madrid winger Vinicius Junior and club president Florentino Perez on Monday.
The apology followed a heated exchange between Simeone and Vinicius during Atletico’s 2-1 Spanish Super Cup semi-final defeat last Thursday.
“I would like to apologise to Mr Florentino and Mr Vinicius for the episode we saw,” Simeone told a news conference.
“It was not good of me to put myself in that position and I accept I didn’t do the right thing.”
The Argentine coach had bickered with the Brazilian both during the match and after he was substituted.
Simeone had also appeared to tell Vinicius that Perez would kick him out of the club.
“Beyond that the team that deserved to win went through, they deserved it,” Simeone added.
Vinicius went on to score in the final, but Real Madrid lost 3-2 against Barcelona.
The winger’s current contract with the club expires in June 2027.
He has not yet agreed to a new deal with the Spanish giants.
