Sunderland stun Chelsea with late winner, Newcastle beat Fulham

The Sun Sport

Sunderland climb to second in Premier League with stoppage time winner against Chelsea, while Newcastle secure late victory over Fulham.

SUNDERLAND climbed to second in the Premier League after Chemsdine Talbi’s stoppage time winner stunned Chelsea 2-1 at Stamford Bridge.

The newly-promoted Black Cats continued their impressive return to the top flight with a dramatic late victory.

Chelsea had taken an early lead when Alejandro Garnacho drilled in his first goal for the club after just four minutes.

Sunderland equalised on 22 minutes through Wilson Isidor’s close-range finish after Chelsea failed to clear a long throw-in.

The visitors defended resolutely throughout the second half despite Chelsea introducing Brazilian wonderkid Estevao from the bench.

Sunderland secured all three points in the 93rd minute when Brian Brobbey set up Talbi to curl perfectly into the bottom corner.

The defeat leaves Chelsea seventh in the table with their title challenge hopes fading rapidly.

Meanwhile, Newcastle secured a much-needed 2-1 victory over Fulham thanks to Bruno Guimaraes’ 90th minute winner.

Jacob Murphy had given the Magpies a first-half lead after capitalising on Calvin Bassey’s defensive error.

Fulham equalised just before the hour mark through Sasa Lukic’s header.

Guimaraes swept home the rebound after Bernd Leno saved William Osula’s initial effort to secure Newcastle’s third league win.

The victory lifts Eddie Howe’s side to 11th place, just three points from the top four.

Fulham’s fourth consecutive defeat leaves them hovering just above the relegation zone.

Manchester United can climb to fourth with victory over Brighton later on Saturday.

Liverpool face Brentford in the evening kick-off looking to end their three-game losing streak in the league.

Arsenal host Crystal Palace on Sunday as they look to maintain their four-point lead at the top. – AFP
