Malaysian shooter Johnathan Wong successfully defended his men’s 10m air pistol title at the 2025 SEA Games in Bangkok with a score of 237.8 points
NATIONAL shooting veteran Johnathan Wong successfully defended his men’s 10 metres air pistol gold medal at the 2025 Thailand SEA Games today.
Competing at the Sports Authority of Thailand Shooting Range, the Olympian displayed composure and consistency to amass a total of 237.8 points.
This victory repeats his gold medal success from the 2021 edition of the Games in Vietnam.
Filipino shooter Michael Angelo Fernandes took the silver medal with 236.1 points.
Indonesia’s Sulthanul Aulia Maruf claimed the bronze medal with a score of 231.1 points.
Johnathan expressed satisfaction with his achievement but emphasised his priority was to motivate his teammates.
“For me, it doesn’t matter whether I defended the title or not,” he said when met after the final.
“What I’m most grateful for is being able to enjoy the competition and come away with the medal.”
He added that winning the medal could serve as inspiration for other athletes in the national contingent.
The 33-year-old Melaka-born athlete believes the national shooting line-up has great potential.
“It’s just about translating that into competition,” Johnathan said.
“I hope that by winning the gold medal today, it will inspire them to shine when it matters most.”
His gold medal marked the first for the Malaysian shooting camp at this edition of the Games.
Johnathan will next compete in the 10m air pistol mixed team event.
He aims to help the team reach the podium in that competition.
Meanwhile, the Malaysian trio finished fifth in the men’s 10m air pistol team event.
Johnathan, Cheah Zen Hong and Wan Muhammad Syafiq Wan Mustaza accumulated 1,702 points.
The Indonesian trio clinched the team gold with a new Games record of 1,736 points.
Vietnam took the team silver medal with a total of 1,717 points. – Bernama
