THE Youth and Sports Ministry is awaiting the final decision from the Ministry of Finance regarding the extension of the contract to host the Malaysian Grand Prix.
Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh stated that the government generally welcomes the contract extension but must provide detailed information to the Finance Ministry.
“I have met with Dorna Sports and conveyed the government’s intention to renew the contract,” she told reporters after visiting the Raja Muda Sports Complex upgrading project.
She explained that the Finance Ministry requires data to ensure expenditure for hosting MotoGP is not wasteful and generates economic returns for Malaysia.
“The organisation of MotoGP usually creates job opportunities, with around 4,000 people gaining employment through it last year.”
Yeoh added that this year’s ticket sales have exceeded 90% with an increased number of tourist purchases.
Sepang International Circuit Chief Executive Officer Azhan Shafriman Hanif said the company is in final discussions with Dorna Sports regarding the new contract duration.
He noted that details on whether the contract will be a continuous five-year period or a 3+2 structure will be announced after approval.
The 2025 Malaysian Grand Prix concluded last Sunday, successfully attracting more than 190,977 spectators over its three-day event. – Bernama
