Malaysia surpasses 50 gold medals at 2025 SEA Games in Thailand

Youth and Sports Minister Dr Mohammed Taufiq Johari praises Malaysian athletes for exceeding 200-medal target at the 2025 Thailand SEA Games.

NEW Youth and Sports Minister Dr Mohammed Taufiq Johari has lauded the Malaysian contingent for securing over 50 gold medals at the 2025 Thailand SEA Games.

He expressed pride in the athletes’ performance as the biennial event nears its conclusion at the Rajamangala National Stadium tomorrow.

Dr Mohammed Taufiq hopes athletes still competing will achieve more glory before the games end.

“I want to congratulate all our heroes and heroines, our athletes who have worked hard, to all the secretariats, and also to all the Malaysian teams who have already made our country proud,“ he told reporters after watching squash at Vajiravudh College.

He said witnessing the SEA Games was his first ministerial duty and that preparations for the 2027 edition in Malaysia would begin.

As of 2 pm today, the Malaysian contingent had collected 51 gold, 51 silver, and 110 bronze medals.

The total haul of 212 medals has surpassed the pre-games target of 200.

The 2025 Thailand SEA Games is being held from December 9 to 20 in Bangkok and Chonburi.

Dr Mohammed Taufiq’s appointment was announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim last Tuesday as part of a Cabinet reshuffle.

The Sungai Petani MP replaces Hannah Yeoh, who is now Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories).
